Perusing the shelves at Other Music this past weekend, we stumbled upon Chris Cohen's debut record Overgrown Path out now on Captured Tracks. The handwritten store description name dropped Caribou and Emitt Rhodes in the same sentence, so we picked it up sight unseen (unheard?). The 37 year old music industry / touring musician veteran layers a psych haze over vocals reminiscent of Rhodes, but also perhaps with a hint of Ben Folds thrown in for flavor (in a very tasteful way). This pleasing and promising debut solo effort is cool and edgy enough to satisfy the Pitchfork crowd (where the below vid debuted today) while possessing a harmonic and melodic accessibility which will satisfy the casual listeners.
